Industrial Safety: online course with internship agreement

The Industrial Safety course teaches the daily work of an HSE technician on a manufacturing or chemical site: contractor coordination, task risk assessment, PPE selection under EU rules, confined spaces, working at height, ATEX zones, SDS and CLP storage decisions, permits-to-work and ISO 45001 investigations. It is aimed at newcomers to HSE roles. It runs 100 % online for 180 days, includes an internship agreement and costs €200.

  • 180 days of access
  • 100 % online, at your own pace
  • Level: beginner · No prior experience required
  • Assessment: 10 quizzes (50 questions) and a final project
  • Internship agreement included
  • Certificate with a verifiable QR code
  • Languages: Spanish, English, French
  • Price: €200

Who it is for

  • People retraining towards a junior HSE technician role on industrial sites
  • Plant operators and supervisors who issue permits or manage contractors
  • Staff at chemical or manufacturing plants who handle solvents, drums or storage areas
  • Anyone preparing for HSE work on an EU industrial site

What do you need to start?

Prior knowledge

  • No prior HSE knowledge is needed
  • Comfort reading technical documents in English, such as safety data sheets and procedures
  • Basic arithmetic for risk scores and bund volumes

Software and equipment

  • A computer with an internet connection
  • EU-OSHA's OiRA (Online interactive Risk Assessment), a free official tool that needs no licence
  • No paid risk-assessment software required

What you'll be able to do

  • Specify what safety information must pass between a host site and a contractor, and at which stage
  • Score, rank and control plant-task hazards using a probability × consequence method
  • Select respirators and gloves suited to a specific solvent-handling task
  • Decide whether a task needs height controls, confined-space controls or both, and choose working controls
  • Recognise ATEX zones 0, 1 and 2 and state what changes inside each zone
  • Use SDS sections and CLP labels to assign products to the right storage segregation group
  • Calculate whether a bund provides enough containment for a set of tanks or drums
  • Run a basic root-cause investigation and read leading and lagging safety KPIs

Skills you will practise

  • Task risk assessment
  • Hierarchy of controls
  • PPE selection
  • Confined-space entry
  • Working at height
  • ATEX zoning
  • SDS and CLP labels
  • Bund capacity calculation
  • Permit-to-work
  • ISO 45001 root-cause analysis

Syllabus

  1. The HSE Technician on an Industrial Site — What an HSE technician does day to day on a plant, from site rounds to spotting conflicting jobs that nobody has coordinated. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  2. Contractor & Visitor Safety on the Plant Floor — Which risk information flows between host site and contractor, in both directions, before mobilisation, at the gate and during the job. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  3. Risk Assessment Applied to a Real Process — Identifying, scoring and ranking hazards of a real plant task, choosing controls from the hierarchy and involving the people who do the work. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  4. Industrial PPE: Selection and the EU Regulation — Choosing the right respirator, cartridge and gloves for solvent work, and separating Regulation (EU) 2016/425 duties from Directive 89/656/EEC duties. · reading and a 5-question quiz

  6. ATEX & Explosive Atmospheres — Recognising zones 0, 1 and 2, the Ex marking versus the general CE mark, and controls such as gas detection and phone restrictions. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  7. Chemical Safety in Manufacturing: SDS, CLP and Storage — Reading Safety Data Sheets and CLP labels to make storage segregation decisions, and calculating bund containment capacity. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  8. Permit-to-Work Systems for High-Risk Tasks — How a permit-to-work decides whether a high-risk job starts at all and whether it may continue, especially when crews overlap. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  9. ISO 45001 in Practice: Auditing for Manufacturing Sites — Why clients require ISO 45001, root-cause investigation beyond the nearest person, leading and lagging KPIs, and the PDCA cycle. · reading and a 5-question quiz
  10. Operational Safety Culture — and The Paperwork — Speaking up about unsafe acts on the floor, such as incomplete scaffold guardrails, and linking everyday interventions to the safety records. · reading and a 5-question quiz

Internship agreement

An intern with this course could support an HSE or operations department with contractor inductions and sign-in records, task risk assessments, PPE checks before solvent transfers, and permit-to-work administration. Other suitable tasks include checking incoming chemicals against SDS and CLP labels for storage, and helping collect KPI data or near-miss records for ISO 45001 follow-up.

The internship can run at the same time as the course, within the 180 days of access.

Frequently asked questions

What job does the Industrial Safety course prepare me for, and does it give me a recognised safety certificate?

The Industrial Safety course follows the work of a junior HSE technician on a manufacturing or chemical site: contractor coordination, risk assessment, PPE, permits-to-work and ISO 45001 follow-up. It does not replace IOSH Managing Safely, an entry-level certificate that the materials note often appears as a requirement on junior HSE postings in the UK and Ireland. You receive a course certificate verifiable by QR code.

What could I actually do during the internship with this course?

Typical tasks are in an HSE, maintenance or operations department: preparing task risk assessments with the crew, checking PPE before chemical handling, running contractor inductions, supporting the permit office and checking deliveries against Safety Data Sheets for storage. You find the host company yourself; the school then issues the internship agreement and its annex, which the company signs electronically, usually within one or two working days.

Which regulations, standards and tools does the course cover?

The course covers Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and Directive 89/656/EEC for PPE, ATEX zoning (zones 0, 1 and 2) with Ex equipment marking, CLP labelling and Safety Data Sheets, Irish and EU work-at-height principles, ISO 45001 with the plan-do-check-act cycle, and permit-to-work systems. It also introduces EU-OSHA's free OiRA tool for first risk assessments without paid software.

Is an HSE technician's job mostly writing risk assessments at a desk?

No. The course corrects that idea directly: a risk assessment is not written once and filed, and it is not done alone at a desk without asking the person who performs the task. HSE work happens largely on the plant floor, checking gates, permits, PPE and scaffolds, and speaking up when something is wrong. The paperwork records decisions made out on site.
